Turn, Turn, Turn  -  Songwriters in the Round #41 does a Twist

The Songwriters in the Round Series, proudly sponsored by the Hallberg Family Foundation twists with a departure from three individual songwriters to a highly popular group - Turn Turn Turn taking the Freemore Music Stage at the Hallberg Center at 7pm on November 30, 2023.

Turn Turn Turn is a trio who bonded over their mutual love of close harmony 60s and 70s country, folk, and pop music and formed an original Americana band. To create their distinctive sound, the band “turns” to the distant past of early American recorded music, “turns” again to that renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s, and finally “turns” again to the present looking forward. Members Adam Levy (guitar, vocals), Savannah Smith (guitar, vocals) and Barb Brynstad (bass, vocals) are all mainstays of the Minnesota music scene and together craft an infectious, pop-infused Americana. Even though Turn Turn Turn was born as a cover band, the group's original material – sweetheart alt-country folk-pop – quickly stole the spotlight. Turn Turn Turn’s Laurel Canyon meets 70's-Nashville-cosmic soul vibe is layered with three-part harmonies that stitch the band’s musical tapestry together. Brynstad, Smith, and Levy have distinct voices, and the combination – a “fourth voice” – is greater than the sum of its parts.

"Where their debut was more Nashville-meets-Greenwich Village, the second LP by this easy-charming trifecta of Twin Cities singer/songwriters sounds entrenched in Los Angeles of the '60s and '70s. Adam Levy of local Honeydogs fame channels paisley pop in "Dopamine Blues" and Buffalo Springfield in "Hymn of the Hater." Savannah Smith goes Gram Parsons-style cosmic country in "Powder." And Barb Brynstad's "Stranger in a Strange Land" suggests she could stand in for Christine McVie." - Star Tribune Ten Best Albums of 2023.

"New Rays from an Old Sun has no shortage of lived experience and is one hell of a piece of great art. The album features all the elements that made Turn Turn Turn’s debut stand out in the genre, amplified to create an even larger-sounding musical tapestry. Reminiscent of the Laurel Canyon psychedelic folk and cosmic country scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s, it too is destined to provide the soundtrack to many a great road trip." - The Current.

The concert is a part of the Opening night festivities for the art center's annual Black and White Art Show, a community collaborative exhibition featuring art of all mediums sans color. The reception begins at 4pm to 7pm with complimentary craft beer from The Uncommon Loon Brewing Company, coffee from the Evergreen Coffeehouse, wine, punch and light snacks. This exhibit is sponsored by the Muske Community Support Foundation.

The Turn, Turn, Turn concert follows immediately at 7pm. The Black and White Art exhibition runs through January 13, 2024. Find out more about Turn Turn Turn at: https://www.turnturnturnmpls.com
